The John Muir Trail 2017 – Northbound
Day 1 – August 8, 2017
Onion Valley to Charlotte Lake via Kearsarge Pass
Resuming the John Muir Trail from where I left off in 2016, I once again joined the trail via Kearsarge Pass from the Onion Valley trailhead. This year I headed north on the JMT for a 14 day journey that would take me northbound on over 130 miles of trail that I had not yet backpacked.
Loaded with a full pack and 7 days worth of food, day 1 takes me to Charlotte Lake – an “easy” first hike day and a staging point for the ascent of Glen Pass on day 2. Passing by Heart Lake, Gilbert Lake, and Big Pothole Lake on the way over Kearsarge Pass, I descend and follow adjacent to Kearsarge Lakes and Bullfrog Lake before joining the John Muir Trail and setting up first camp at Charlotte Lake.
In 2017, I completed the John Muir Trail on a long northbound section starting at Onion Valley, where I left off in 2016, and finishing in Happy Isles in Yosemite. Here is part of my 14 day journey to complete the trail.
